What are metric pipe connection fittings?
Metric pipe fittings are the DIN 2353 cutting-ring system that connects steel hydraulic tube to other tube and to equipment. As the nut is tightened, the ring bites into the tube, providing both grip and sealing; the seal is made on the 24° cone face. Two pressure classes exist: light (L) and heavy (S) series.

- Series: L or S
- The L (light) series works at 160–315 bar, the S (heavy) series at 400–630 bar. For the same tube diameter the two series have different thread sizes and cannot be mixed.
- Tube outside diameter
- In the metric system the size refers to the tube outside diameter (Ø6, Ø8, Ø10, Ø12…). The fitting is selected to this; wall thickness sets the pressure class.
- Assembly sequence
- Slide the nut and cutting ring onto the tube, seat the tube fully against the stop, then tighten by the number of turns given in the catalogue. Under-tightening leaks; over-tightening deforms the ring.
- Body type
- Union, elbow, tee, swivel, bulkhead, welded and plug bodies are chosen to suit the line geometry. Separate gauge-port bodies are available for pressure gauges.
Frequently asked
Can L and S series be mixed?
No. For the same tube diameter the thread size and cone geometry differ between L and S. Forced assembly will not seal and the connection can blow out under pressure.
Can a cutting ring be reused?
A ring already bitten into a tube may be refitted to that same tube end, but never to a different tube. Deformed or cracked rings must always be replaced.
Can I fit a metric fitting to a BSP thread?
No. Metric threads are 60° and BSP 55°, with different pitches. Use an adapter nipple to move between standards.
