What are hose fittings?
A hose fitting is the metal connector crimped onto the end of a hydraulic hose to join the line to a machine or valve. It consists of a ferrule (outer sleeve) and a nipple (inner body); the hose is compressed between the two to form the seal. Thread standard, angle and sealing face are chosen to match the equipment.

Details & Table →What to look for
- Thread standard
- Metric (DIN 2353), BSP, Whitworth/UNF-JIC, ORFS and Komatsu threads look similar but are not interchangeable. Forcing the wrong standard strips the thread and the line separates under pressure.
- Sealing type
- The seal comes from the seating face, not the thread: 24° cone, 37° flare, flat-face O-ring (ORFS) or 60° cone. Match the face of the mating part.
- Angle
- Straight, 45° and 90° elbows exist to protect the hose bend radius. In tight spaces an elbow fitting is safer than forcing the hose to bend.
- Ferrule type
- Skive, no-skive, 4SP/4SH and thermoplastic ferrules differ. The ferrule must suit the hose reinforcement and the crimp die.
Frequently asked
How do I identify the thread standard?
Measure the outside diameter with a caliper and the pitch with a thread gauge, then compare against the tables in our Thread & Size Guide. BSP is 55°, metric and NPT are 60°; ORFS is recognised instantly by the O-ring groove in its flat face.
How is a fitting attached to a hose?
The hose is cut to length, skived if required, the ferrule and nipple are assembled and crimped with a hydraulic press to the diameter given in the catalogue. Crimp diameter is critical — under-crimping leaks, over-crimping cuts the reinforcement wire.
Can I mix hose and fittings from different brands?
Not recommended. Crimp diameters and ferrule geometry vary by brand, and mixing voids the manufacturer’s pressure warranty.
